How to Clean Polyester Fabric?

Nothing can beat polyester fabric when it comes to cleaning and maintenance. Since the fabric is chemical resistant, it is free from stretching, abrasions, and shrinking over time. This fabric is easy to take care of, which makes it a popular material in clothing manufacturing.

Is Polyester Safe to Wash in Washing Machine?

Polyester is safe to wash in a washing machine. Use warm water in cleaning the cloth with mild laundry detergent. Never use detergents that are made of harsh ingredients that can damage the fibers.  When using the machine, avoid turning on the hot water setting unless it is stated in the care label instructions.  Warm water can also prevent color fading and shrinkage.

Is Cold Water Ideal for Polyester?

There’s nothing wrong if you prefer to wash polyester in cold water for as long as it does not have oily and stubborn stains.  The cold temperature in your machine setting cannot offer the needed heat for the laundry detergent to dislodge the stains.

Why Use Permanent Press Settings?

Setting your machine in a permanent press can extend the longevity of your clothes. Placing the spin cycle in slow motion helps prevent creases and wrinkles to your garments. This applies to clothes that you frequently wear.

Is it Necessary to Bleach Polyester?

Using a bleaching solution like chlorine can only break down the fibers of your polyester garment. The worst could happen if the bleach causes discoloration to your colored clothes. For white polyester, you can presoak it in a mild detergent for thirty minutes in your washing machine before rinsing it.

Handwashing Polyester

If the care label tells you to hand wash your polyester garment, handle it with extra care. Fill the basin or tub with warm, but not boiling water and pour enough detergent. Allow the detergent to dissolve in water before you dump the clothes.

Here’s How to Do it:

  • Submerge the garment in a basin filled with clean water.
  • Dump the wet garment in a separate basin filled with the dissolved detergent in warm water.
  • Swirl the clothes around in the warm water to loosen the stains.
  • Allow the clothes to steep in the soapy water for several minutes.
  • When the stains are lifted, rinse them under running cold water.
  • To save on water, fill the basin once more with cold water, and rinse the clothes.
  • Repeat the steps until no more suds are visible in the water.

Removing Excess Water

When the clothes are fully rinsed, it is time to remove excess water. Fold the clothes individually, and gently press it in your tub or basin. Keep squeezing out the remaining water from each garment. An effective way to prevent wrinkles while drying the garment is to lay it on a clean towel and roll up to squeeze out the water. Note: Never wring polyester when squeezing out the water to avoid damaging the fiber.

Conclusion

Now, you know how to clean polyester fabric the natural way. You can wash it using your washing machine or hand wash. By following the instructions above, it is guaranteed that your garment will look bright and clean for years. It is important that you read the care label instructions to make it last for a lifetime.
